Polyester magnetic tape, the standard recording format since the mid 6ts was compromised in 1975 when law mandated the removal of a key chemical component in the tape binder formulation. The overwhelming majority of music recorded since became afflicted with sticky shed syndrome where oxide destabilized under normal room temperature and humidity. Dormant tape under no circumstance should be played before diagnosis of its condition with subsequent provisional baking. The majority of studio engineers today simply do not have proper experience to handle sticky shed and can permanently compromise the tape unknowingly. Hollygrove Records is blessed to work with Joel Katz, former head of east coast Ampex operations, RCA engineer, and owner of South Broadway studios with over 30 years of tape expertise. Currently mastering the meticulous art of salvaging flood-damaged tape no job has proven beyond Joel's capabilities. Please contact us if your production master is in need of service for a one-to-one preservation transfer, we are happy to assist!
